6. (193) Jaymar Johnson, WR

The Vikings needed some speed to help out the offense and special teams and that led to the selection of Jaymar Johnson.  Johnson is 6′0″, 176 pounds so he’s a tad small to be anything more than a #4 of #5 WR on the Vikings.  He was a playmaker in college though.  In his last two seasons at Jackson State, Johnson caught 66 passes for 1,140 yards (17.3 avg) with 9 TD grabs.  He also returned 43 punts for 469 yards (10.9 avg) with 2 TD returns.  This is a boom or bust pick for the Vikings.

6. (187) John Sullivan, C

John Sullivan is a smart player as he made all of the line calls at Notre Dame but he’s limited athletically.  He is not good at hitting moving targets in the running game but he’s a decent pass blocker.  With the Vikings’ style of offense however, Sullivan will have to improve his run blocking to get on the field.  He played in 47 games (43 starts) at Notre Dame.  Sullivan is 6′3″, 294 pounds and he could also be tried out at guard for the Vikings.  If the Vikings can coach up Sullivan they could have something here.

5. (152) Letroy Guion, DT

Letroy Guion is a classic DT as he doesn’t make many plays outside the tackle box.  He will need to get stronger to deal with NFL O-Linemen as he sometimes got pushed around on running plays last season.  He is 6′4″, 295 pounds and he could use some more sand in his shoes.  Guion played in 34 games (14 starts) at Florida State and he finished with 66 tackles, had 12.5 tackles for a loss and he had 1.5 sacks.  Don’t expect a whole lot out of Guion unless he gets a bit tougher.

5. (137) John David Booty, QB

The Vikings were smart to draft John David Booty because they are just a QB away from being a really good team.  With Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte playing ahead of him it isn’t a stretch to think that he might get to play near the end of the season.  He has a strong enough arm to make most all of the required throws in the NFL and he’s smart.  Booty is 6′2″, 213 pounds and he likes to stand strong in the pocket as he’s not much of a runner.  Booty played in 35 games (20 starts) at USC and he completed 518 of 832 passes (62.3%) for 6,125 yards with 55 TD passes and 21 interceptions.  This was a solid pick for the Vikings.

2. (43) Tyrell Johnson, S

The Vikings might have taken Tyrell Johnson a tad early but he has a large upside.  Johnson is a tad short at 5′11″, 200 pounds but he runs a 4.5 40 which isn’t bad.  Johnson played in 46 games (45 starts) at Arkansas State and he made 363 tackles, broke up 28 passes, had 13 interceptions, forced 4 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles.  Despite playing at a small school, Johnson also saved his best for games against big teams like Texas.  Johnson will likely play free safety this season but he’s more effective at strong safety because he’s a good run defender.  Johnson will also contribute on special teams right away for the Vikings.
