Brad Childress did a great job in his second season for the Minnesota Vikings

All the Vikings need is a legit QB to be a playoff team.  Coach Childress saw the Vikings improve to 8-8 on the season as they missed the Wild Card in the NFC by one game.  The Vikings ran the ball effectively and they played good defense against the run.  If they can get a pass rusher on defense their secondary will improve because they have playmakers in the back of the defense.  Still, they can’t hold coverage forever.  Coach Childress has been in Minnesota for two seasons and he has compiled a 14-18 (.438 %) record.

The only thing holding the Minnesota Vikings back is a legit QB

The Vikings need a legit starting QB as all three of their current quarterbacks appear to be no better than backups.  Tarvaris Jackson flashed potential at times but he also made more than his fair share of stupid mistakes that cost the Vikings some games.  Jackson played in 12 games last season for the Vikings and he completed 171 of 294 passes (58.2%) for 1,911 yards with 9 TD passes and 12 interceptions (70.8 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 54 times for 260 yards (4.8 ypc) with 3 TD runs.  Jackson has now played in 16 games in his NFL career and he has completed 218 of 375 passes (58.1%) for 2,386 yards with 11 TD passes and 16 interceptions (69.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 69 times for 337 yards (4.9 ypc) with 4 TD runs.

Kelly Holcomb is the veteran of this motley crew and he did not play well either.  Holcomb played in 3 games this season for the Vikings and he completed 42 of 83 passes (50.6%) for 515 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 interception (73.1 QB Rating).  Holcomb has now played in 41 games in his NFL career and he has completed 565 of 893 passes (63.3%) for 5,916 yards with 39 TD passes and 38 interceptions (79.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 43 times for 30 yards (0.7 ypc) with 1 TD run.

Brooks Bollinger was the QB that played the best this season for the Vikings.  He played in 5 games this season for the Vikings and he completed 33 of 50 passes (66%) for 391 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception (88.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 5 times for 18 yards (3.6 ypc).  Bollinger has now played in 19 games in his NFL career and he has completed 201 of 343 passes (58.6%) for 2,155 yards with 8 TD passes and 8 interceptions (75.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 41 times for 155 yards (3.8 ypc).

Denver Broncos 22, Minnesota Vikings 19 in OT

Blogged under Game Recaps, Bloglockers, Front Page, Breaking Viking News by admin on Tuesday 1 January 2008 at 7:24 pm

The Vikings gave a great effort in the game on Sunday in Denver but they just fell a tad short.  Tarvaris Jackson had a solid game as he completed 16 of 31 passes for 175 yards with 2 TD passes.  He also rushed for 36 yards on 4 carries (9.0 ypc) and he scored 2 2-point conversions in the 4th quarter to help send the game into OT.  Chester Taylor led the Vikings in rushing with 83 yards on 10 carries (8.3 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 9 yards.  Adrian Peterson didn’t play as well as Taylor as he carried the ball 11 times for 36 yards (3.3 ypc).  Bobby Wade had an outstanding game at receiver as he caught 5 passes for 92 yards (18.4 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  The Vikings finished up with 172 yards rushing on 27 carries (6.4 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 31 passes for 160 yards.

The defense was led by Kenechi Udeze, Darren Sharper and E.J. Henderson who each had 8 tackles apiece.  The Broncos finished up with 128 yards rushing on 27 carries (4.7 ypc) and they also completed 26 of 37 passes for 234 yards.
