The over/under on wins for the Minnesota Vikings is 7 for the 2007 season

I would probably keep my money in my pocket.  The Vikings season will all hinge on how well their WRs and QBs play.  That’s because they have an awesome running game on offense and a great defense against the run.  If the Vikings can get a pass rush going they will graduate to being one of the best overall defenses in the NFL.  I think the linemakers are right about this team as they have the feel of a 7 win team.  I would pass on betting the total.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons just don’t match up well with the Vikings.  The Falcons are trying open up the offense more through the air and that’s the best plan of attacking a Vikings’ defense that just doesn’t give up any rushing yards to anyone.  The Vikings have a good set of DBs in CBs Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin and safeties Dwight Smith and Darren Sharper and they match up very well against Joe Horn and the rejects (Roddy White & Michael Jenkins).  Look for Darren Sharper and Dwight Smith to shut down Alge Crumpler in the passing game.  The Falcons running game was so good last season because of Michael Vick and he’s no longer around.  The rushing yards will be hard for the Falcons to come by as DTs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams are hard to move.  Also MLB E.J. Henderson is an assassin in the running game when running free which he will likely be doing against the Falcons.  Look for Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood to each have long days against the Vikings on Sunday.

The Vikings are going to be very vanilla on offense as they are going to run the football.  The Falcons do have the size in the middle to challenge the offensive line of the Vikings with DTs Rod Coleman and Grady Jackson.  Also, MLB Keith Brooking is all over the football field and he will likely be dealing with Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor on a lot of power runs.  OLBs Demorrio Williams and Michael Boley must contain the running backs on outside runs or the Falcons will be in for a long day.  Falcons strong safety Lawyer Milloy is a good run defender and the front seven of the Falcons defense will need his help.  The Falcons do have a nice set of pass rushing ends in RE John Abraham and LE rookie Jamaal Anderson but Vikings’ QB Tavaris Jackson will not be passing much.  CB DeAngelo Hall who is outstanding in coverage will be negated by the fact that the Vikings don’t throw and they have no #1 WR.  Get used to seeing the Vikings run to the left behind tackle Bryant McKinnie and guard Steve Hutchinson because the Falcons won’t likely be able to stop them from doing it.

PREDICTION:  The Falcons are a mess right now and Coach Petrino will wish he was back coaching at Louisville after this game.  Look for a low scoring, boring football game that the Vikings will win.

The Minnesota Vikings claim TE/FB Garrett Mills from the Patriots

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Viking News,Front Page by squarebettor on Wednesday 5 September 2007 at 4:31 pm

The Vikings have claimed TE/FB Garrett Mills off of waivers from the Patriots.  He caught 6 passes for 42 yards this pre-season but he didn’t get on the field for the Patriots as a rookie last season.  Mills could probably handle either fullback or tight end for the Vikings this season.

The Minnesota Vikings release Tyler Thigpen and Artose Pinner

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Viking News,Front Page by squarebettor on Wednesday 5 September 2007 at 4:20 pm

The Vikings have released QB Tyler Thigpen and RB Artose Pinner.  Thigpen was made expendable after the Vikings added Kelly Holcomb in a trade with the Eagles.  Thigpen completed 5 of 11 (45.5%) passes for 32 yards with 0 TDs and 0 INTs (52.5 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 7 times for 21 yards (3.0 ypc) in the pre-season.  Pinner carried the football 22 times for 70 yards (3.2 ypc) with 1 TD run in the pre-season.

The Minnesota Vikings cut 4 offensive players

The Vikings have cut RB Ciatrick Fason, WRs Billy McMullen and Cortez Hankton and TE Richard Owens.  Fason was made expendable due to the depth the Vikings now have at running back.  Fason carried the ball 14 times for only 25 yards (1.8 ypc) in the pre-season.  McMullen caught 4 passes for 43 yards (10.8 avg) and Cortez Hankton didn’t even catch one pass in the pre-season.  TE Richard Owens only caught 1 pass for 7 yards.

Minnesota Vikings 23, Dallas Cowboys 14

The Vikings looked pretty good in their final tuneup for the regular season.  Tavaris Jackson made a brief appearance and he completed just 1 of 5 passes for 13 yards.  Brooks Bollinger saved his best performance for the last pre-season game as he completed 9 of 15 passes for 109 yards and a TD.  Kelly Holcomb completed 5 of 8 passes for 99 yards and 1 interception in first game with the Vikings.  Artose Pinner led the way in the running game with 12 carries for 34 yards (2.8 ypc) and a TD.  Mewelde Moore looked good as he always does carrying the ball 7 times for 33 yards (4.7 ypc).  Ciatrick Fason had a rough time as he rushed for 18 yards on 8 carries (2.3 ypc).  Rookie Sidney Rice caught 2 passes for 17 yards and a TD.  The Vikings finished up the game with 99 yards rushing on 35 carries (2.8 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 32 passes for 180 yards.

The Vikings’ defense was tough against the run as always holding the Cowboys to only 29 yards rushing on 15 carries (1.9 ypc).  But the Cowboys completed 30 of 39 passes for 208 yards.
